Unforgettable holiday experience in a medieval castle

9 People|4 Bedrooms|

Property Description

The castle Neuhaus was built in the middle of the 14th Built by the Stubenberg family as a fief in the 19th century; as early as 1375 a Hans von Neuhaus is mentioned in a document. Later owners were the Drachsler, who met in 1551 the misfortune to see the castle destroyed by fire; but soon followed the reconstruction, in which the castle essentially received its present form. From 1664 followed the counts Wurmbrand – Stuppach, which strengthened the castle in view of the then threat of Turks and Kuruzzen by the establishment of the characteristic shield wall considerably. After the merger of the reign Neuhaus with that of Schielleiten, the administration of the property was relocated there around 1780 and Neuhaus leave. In 1800, the castle burned down again due to lightning. There followed 200 years of decay; it is only due to the unusual thickness of the walls (up to 4.50 m) that in 1982 there was still enough substance to tackle the revitalization by the current owners.
Today, the renovation of the medieval, four-storey residential tower (Palas) – with its 32 m height probably the oldest skyscraper in Styria – and the two outbuildings is largely completed.

The scandal of 1551 is reminiscent of a creepy legend, which reports that in the castle once lived three liderliche brothers, right brawlers and Leuteschinder, who treated their serf farmers almost inhumane. One day they rode to Stubenberg and stole a barrel of Messwein from the pastor. When baod on Easter Sunday came and the people went to church, the journeymen stayed back in the Knights’ Hall, where they drinking, stingy and ungodly speeches leading the stolen wine out. Completely drunk, they staggered into the courtyard to reproach the dogs with the remains of consecrated Easter meat. At the moment when the bells of Stubenberg rang for change, the castle suddenly shook in its foundations and a bolt of lightning struck out into the keep, killing the three brothers and setting the castle ablaze. And nobody dared to rebuild them ….

And in the original:

“This castle has a pleasant seat; the air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
Unto our gentle senses.

The temple-haunting martlet, does approve,
By his loved one mansionry, that the heaven’s breath
Smells wooingly here,”
