On the basis of tradition, Curtea de Arges was founded in the thirteenth century by the prince Radu el Negro, as the capital of the kingdom of Wallachia. The city served as a site for several medieval churches, including the Cathedral of Curtea de Arges which was built in 1290, when the city was still a small town. Another important church is Biserica Domneasca. Other tourist goals to visit: Barajul Vidraru, the ruins of Castle Poenari.
