The town of Whitby has a busy fishing harbour as well as a long stretch of beach, which makes it one of the east coast's most popular resorts. Take a walk up to the abbey and count the 199 steps on the way. Once you reach the top, you're sure to agree that the views more than make up for the climb a compelling coastal vista that will take your breath away, and from there you can carry on along the Cleveland Way which travels down the coast to its finishing point in Filey.
To the north of Whitby, there's the beautiful resort of Sandsend and the quaint resort of Staithes with its steep, cobbled streets and quirky houses. To the south, there's the much larger seaside resort of Scarborough with two fantastic beaches for the children to enjoy, complete with golden sands, ice cream and donkeys. Sure enough, there's something in Whitby for all manner of holidaymakers. Beach 1 mile. Shop, pub and restaurant 700 yards.
