Fowey is home to a royal yacht club and boasts an annual royal regatta, a week-long festival on and off the water, as well as an annual cultural festival. There are many cultural links to the town from the author Daphne Du Maurier to the Kenneth Grahams Wind in the Willows loosely based on the river and using local landmarks in the plot.
The river and estuary is home to much wildlife with birds, seals and even dolphins that venture close to the shore. There are many sightseeing boats that provide the opportunity to spot them and see this dramatic coastline from a different perspective.
Kayaking trips up the river to many of the small waterside villages with their quaint churches and lively pubs are also available.
A ferry crosses the estuary at both ends of the town and can be used to complete a famous local walk that hugs the estuary, meanders through wooded valleys, explores hidden creeks and provides amazing views from the cliffs.
Cycling, golf, horse riding and walking can all be enjoyed locally as can many of the historic country houses and castles such as Lanhydrock House and Restormel Castle, the Eden Project and many other National Trust and private gardens that are in abundance in the south of Cornwall.
