Traditional salmon fishing is sometimes still practised in summertime, with nets strung from poles on the beach to trap fish in the falling tide. The Lunan Water meanders onto the beach in a beautiful estuary. High on a grassy bluff overlooking the river and bay are the ruins of Red Castle, built in the 1200s for King William of Scotland. There is a café 220 yards away offering locally produced food, which is great for breakfast or snacks after a spell on the beach. Further afield, but still within easy reach, the towns of Montrose and Arbroath are well worth a visit, while the Angus Glens offer miles of walking in peace and quiet in total contrast to the beach scenery. In the wider area are many notable places for visits such as Glamis Castle. Shop and pub 4 miles, restaurants 3 miles.
