Fort William makes an excellent holiday base all year round. The town itself provides ample facilities and there is easy access to the magnificent countryside, offering opportunities for many outdoor pursuits, breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. Known as the 'outdoor capital of the UK', activities include mountain biking, climbing, skiing, kayaking, walking, golf and fishing.
There are many local attractions including the Glenfinnan Monument, Nevis Range Mountain Resort and a world championship mountain bike course. Take a trip on the famous Jacobite Steam Train (Hogwarts Express) from Fort William to Mallaig. Experience historic Glencoe, with its magnificent mountain ranges, or enjoy a visit to Oban, the 'gateway to the isles'. The islands of Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna can be visited from Mallaig, or a short ferry crossing at Lochaline will allow you to explore the islands of Mull and Iona. Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the most westerly point of mainland Britain, makes a lovely day out, whilst Aviemore, Inverness, Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye are also within easy reach. The area is steeped in history and there are plenty of historic castles, museums, distilleries and beautiful gardens to explore.
