Originally it was a baroque townhouse. It was rebuilt in 1765 (probably by John Joseph Wirch) for Joseph from Bretfeld-Hlumchansky. Baron Bretfeld gathered a significant collection of books and paintings and made it an important cultural center, where he held a well attended balls and concerts. Among the prominent guests at the palace, were Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giacomo Casanova. St. relief. Nicholas on the facade and a group of statues on the staircase are the work of Ignaz Franz Platzer, the first floor was discovered in 1900 and restored murals.
After the death of Joseph Bretfeld in 1820, his daughter Theresa Lazhanska sold the building a few years later
