The town of Goldisthal sits at an elevation of 500 to 865m and is not far from the famous Rennsteig ridgeway. Both the town and the surrounding region make an ideal base for setting off on hikes through the Thuringian Forest. Favourite excursion destinations: The spa town of Masserberg and its bath house, which can be reached either on foot (3.5 km) or by car (about a ten-minute drive). Hiking round the Wurzelbergfarmde nature preserve and Europe’s biggest and most modern pumped-storage hydroelectric plant or visiting the cavern. Oberhof with its sport centres or the world-renowned cities of Erfurt and Weimar, both rich in culture and history. Bavaria and the Franconian region are also not far away. Kronach, Coburg and Kulmbach are worth a visit as well.
