Noisy, smelly and unquestionably iconic, the steam locomotive ushered in a new era of travel and commerce at the turn of the 19th century, and now you can drive one yourself in the south-east countryside. From the footplate of your steam light engine you’ll pass through the High Rocks station, recreated after the original closed in the 1950s, and even cross with the Spa Valley passenger services at Groombridge under the control of their classic signal box.
You’ll get to drive either locomotive under the instruction of the Spa Valley Railway’s experienced instructors from Tunbridge Wells West to Eridge and back again, twice, making for a total drive of 20 miles. Travel the countryside in a classic locomotive and enjoy a privileged view of the rails from the best seat in the house, all in one amazing morning or afternoon.
