West Dean and Surroundings

The location of S85398 is in the Cuckmere Valley just south of Alfriston on the road towards the Seven Sisters Countryside Park. The village was originally a Manorial Farm and nearly all the structures are converted flint barns and buildings dating back to 1220. A farm from the saxon era, the Smithy, Dairy, Great Barn, School and other houses remain. Two national paths, The South Downs Way and Merchants Way thread their way through the woods here. Nearby Lullington Heath is a rare chalk downland heath in the centre of the forest and well worth a visit.

The location of S85398 is beyond compare with walking and cycle trails nearby to the Seven Sisters Country Park and secluded beaches. Cycle through the woods to the lighthouse, or down the lanes and breath the fresh air whilst spotting birds such as buzzards and egrets.

The old smuggling village of Alfriston is just five miles away surrounded by the Wealden South Downs, and the South Downs Way passes through the centre of this historical village. Around the village, visitors can enjoy the famous St Andrews church and Alfriston Clergy House, a National Trust property, which offers delightful gardens and lovely views across the Downs. The village hosts many events throughout the year including the Alfriston festival and Farmers markets.

Award winning Drusillas Park is 3.5 miles from S85398. A great family day out that includes a small zoo where you can come face to face with hundreds of exotic animals from monkeys and meerkats to penguins and pandas. There are also a multitude of rides and experiences to keep the little ones entertained including Hello Kitty and Thomas the Tank Engine rides and the Eden's Eye Maze.

Visit Brighton and the historical 'Lanes', Eastbourne and stroll along the Victorian pier, Drusillas Zoo, Beachy Head and Glyndebourne (opera in the grounds during the summer) within 5 miles.

Pevensey Castle is also worth a visit as it was the landing place of William the Conqueror's army in 1066. From the fourth century it had been a Roman and Saxon Shore Fort and two thirds of the walls still stand today. Following the conquest a full scale Norman castle with a square keep and gatehouse was built within the fort. Today the castle is looked after by English Heritage and can be found under Places to Visit in East Sussex on our website.
