Wonderful Tregaron And The Cambrian Mountains Cottage

4 People|2 Bedrooms|

Property Description

S75170 dates back to 1750 and is thought to be the oldest cottage in the village. This traditional Grade II listed cottage, set in the village centre, is awash with character, from the thick stone walls, old panelled walls and exposed beams, to the ornamental range fireplace. The kitchen is well equipped with all the up-to-date appliances and equipment you need. There is a cute breakfast bar and an antique Welsh dresser. The cosy living/dining room is perfect for relaxing in after a busy day out, with comfy sofas, cosy throws and plump cushions. Entertainment is taken care of, and there is also a large and diverse CD collection, interesting books, maps and board games. There is a handmade, hardwood dining table with old chairs rescued from a nearby chapel. Original red and black floor tiles, exposed beams and old stone walls create a lovely atmosphere. The two bedrooms feature the old roof beams, antique furniture and handmade wooden beds.

Enjoy dining outside at the picnic table in the large grassy garden, which has an ancient apple tree and views of the Ceredigion countryside and red kites gliding and calling overhead. In days gone by, the cottage was occupied by an expert gardener whose vegetables are still talked about in the village. The cottage is situated in a convenient location, a short walk from Pontrhydfendigaids well-stocked village shop and two traditional pubs, both with beer gardens, pool tables and serving good food.

The cottage is just a 14-mile drive, along one of the most beautiful roads in Britain, from the seaside and university town of Aberystwyth. Explore the promenade, beaches, castle, marina, arts centre, museum and plenty of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The village lies to the west of the Cambrian Mountains, and is located between Devils Bridge and the historic market town of Tregaron. The heart of the village of Pontrhydfendigaid – the bridge of the blessed ford (known locally as Bont) has a narrow hump backed bridge across the river Teifi, renowned as one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the UK. Located just a mile or so from the cottage, are the ruins of the 12th-century monastery ruins of Strata Florida, once one of Europes most significant Cistercian monasteries and where archaeological digs are now revealing a much bigger site than originally imagined. It is reputedly the burial site of Dafydd ap Gwilym, one of the great medieval Welsh poets.

For bird watchers, this is the ultimate location as it lies in the heart of the Red Kite country and only a short distance from the famous Tregaron red kite Centre and Feeding Station. The surrounding mountains and countryside offer excellent walking, cycling (on and off road) and fishing. Visit the wonderful nature reserve of Cors Caron, 3 miles away. Covering an area of over 2, 000 acres, the site comprises three raised bogs built up from deep layers of peat that have taken around 12, 000 years to form. It is a wild landscape made accessible by a network of boardwalks that enable visitors to get right into the heart of varied habitats and to enjoy seeing the wildlife at close quarters. Many beautiful walks in the surrounding countryside can be enjoyed direct from the cottage without having to drive.

9 miles to the north you can visit Devils Bridge Falls. These unique waterfalls have been attracting visitors from around the world since the 18th century, including William Wordsworth who wrote about the Torrent at the Devils Bridge. Today, the Falls Nature Trail provides a unique opportunity to see this great natural feature in the Rheidol Gorge. Catch the Vale of Rheidol steam train from here that meanders through the countryside to Aberystwyth. Make S75170 your base whilst you enjoy all the riches this fascinating area has to offer.
