Tillington and beyond

S88368 is set in the beautiful countryside of the South Downs National Park. The village is home to All Hallows Church with its unusual Scots crown spire which inspired both John Constable and J.W. Turner. There are many old dwellings, including medieval timber framed houses, with one third of the buildings in the parish being Grade II listed

The Barn is located directly opposite the stately home of Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned and maintained by the National Trust. Petworth House has a rich and varied history waiting to be discovered with state rooms saturated with internationally important paintings by artists such as Van Dyck, Reynolds, Titian and Blake together with classical and neo-classical sculptures. You can follow in the footsteps of JMW Turner and whose paintings of Petworth Park can still be seen at Petworth today. The town itself is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following your enjoyment of Petworth House and Park.

The market town of Midhurst nestles next to Cowdray Park and is a short ten minute drive from the cottage. The Cowdray Estate is most famous for its polo club particularly in June and July when the polo set meet for the Gold Cup. The Cowdray ruins are also of note since they were important early Tudor courtiers' palaces built from 1520 and form an impressive backdrop to Midhurst. Cowdray played host to both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry viii and Guy Fawkes once worked at the house, which later caused the Montague Family to be implicated in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Partially destroyed by fire in 1793, the magnificent ruins now tower over the town's water meadows and visitors can explore where Kings and Queens of England once stood.

Bignor Roman Villa is twenty minutes drive from The Barn. It is a large Roman courtyard villa which has been excavated and put on public display on the Bignor estate and is well known for its high quality mosaic floors, which are some of the most complete and intricate in the country. The village of Bignor is closely linked to the Romans. Here you will find the Roman Villa, a home and farm with world class mosaic floors that was a significant settlement in the 3rd Century AD. We include a link to Bignor Roman Villa under Places to Visit on the website.

The drive south from either Petworth or Midhurst over the South Downs to Chichester is extremely picturesque. Taking either road will lead you close to Goodwood about ten miles away, famous for its horseracing and more recently for the motorsport events; The Fesitval of Speed and the Goodwood Revival. The South Downs all around Goodwood offer plenty of good walking opportunities and provide you with classic Downland scenery and fine views towards Chichester Cathedral and the Isle of Wight beyond.

The cathedral city of Chichester is one of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK. Chichester has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. The city's broad streets are packed with listed buildings headed by the towering presence of the cathedral, now home to a family of peregrine falcons who swoop over the city at dusk . The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls and this helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. There are plenty of good shops and restaurants and if you enjoy the theatre the Chichester Festival Theatre is worth considering as it features many world premieres.

You may also consider a trip to Arundel Castle with its 1000 year history, home to the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, which is a twenty minute drive away or explore the south coast and its beaches. Littlehampton, which is a 30 minute drive, is a beautiful length of unspoilt beach designated as of Special Scientific Interest.
