The village has a general store, village pub and a tea room as well as a watermill, the New Abbey Corn Mill, which is still in full working order and open to visitors. A popular walk just 2½ miles from New Abbey is to walk up to the summit of Criffel, a hump-backed hill that at 1871ft is the highest for miles around offering beautiful views of the surrounding area. Mabie Farm Park is just a short drive away and provides a great day out for children. Southerness and Sandyhills beaches are both a quick drive away too – Southerness has Scotland's oldest lighthouse and Sandyhills has great caves and rockpools to provide hours of exploration.
