Drumlanrigg Castle and Gardens (home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry), Ellisland (once home to Robert Burns), Charles Jenck's Garden of Cosmic Speculation and the world-class mountain biking routes, the 7 Stanes, are all on your doorstep. 20 minutes south is the town of Dumfries, with its museum, Camera Obscura, Robert Burns' Trails, Gracefield Arts Centre, Dalscone Farm, Farmer Den, cinema, ice-rink, swimming pool, restaurants, tea rooms and shops are sure to keep the whole family entertained. More family activities can be found slightly further a field. These include the likes of Charles Jenck's Crawick Multiverse, Cream O' Galloway, Mabie Farm Park, Laggan Outdoor Centre, Caerlaverock Castle and Wetlands Centre, the red kite feeding station, and not forgetting that the Galloway Forest Park is one of the darkest places in Scotland, which is why it's the UK's first Dark Sky Park and is excellent for stargazing. A day trip to the rugged coastline and seaside, with visits to the quaint villages and towns such as Kippford, Sandyhills, Southerness and Kirkcudbright will complete your holiday. This is an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating region as it is centrally based in south west Scotland for day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stranraer or Carlisle which are all within a 1½ hour drive. If you fancy a stress free day without driving, jump on a train at Dumfries or Lockerbie.
