Bishop Auckland is only 1½ miles away and offers a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants as well as historical attractions including Auckland Castle. The magical Kynren Spectacular which goes live for the second time in July 2017 and finishes in September 2017, charts over 2000 years of British history, myth and legend. The show uses a cast of thousands of volunteers from the area and unfolds upon a landscaped, open air stage which is huge in size and has a full size lake at its centre. The cathedral city of Durham is only 15 minutes away, and is perfect for guests of all ages at any time of year. Popular tourist attractions include the bi-annual Lumiere Festival, annual jazz festival, book week, arts week, the theatre, castle and cathedral, as well as many designer boutiques and shops. Also perfect as a base for guests with friends and family based at Durham University, graduation and taster weeks to attend and colleges to check out, the main campuses are all within an easy 20-minute drive.
There are many footpaths, walks and cycle paths that pass through the area and out into the countryside of County Durham. Hamsterley Forest is only 7 miles away and is a delightful two thousand hectare site with popular walking trails, including the Gruffalo Trail, cycle trails and orienteering, as well as plenty of spots for the perfect picnic. Only 1½ miles away guests will find the village of Escomb which is home to Escomb Church, the earliest Saxon Church in Britain. Witton Castle, in Witton le Wear is 5 miles away and offers fly fishing, a bird sanctuary, historic castle and beautiful grounds. The National Railway Museum in Shildon is only 3 miles away and is another great destination for a fun filled day out. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
