Farnham has a wealth of culture, shops, eateries, a castle and a museum. For further sightseeing, catch the train from either Farnham or nearby Alton to London Waterloo, just an hour away, or to the south coast. Scenic walks can be enjoyed in the South Downs National Park and Alice Holt Forest. Perhaps visit Jane Austen's House Museum at Chawton and the Gilbert White Museum at Selborne? Chichester, with its ornate cathedral, Festival Theatre, cinema and racecourse, and Portsmouth with its historic dockyard, Spinnaker Tower, Royal Marines Museum, Gunwharf Quays, waterside dining and shopping outlets, are approximately a 50-minute drive away.
The Watercress Line steam railway at Alresford provides a delightful trip stopping off at various stations along the way. Other places well worth a visit include the market town of Petersfield; the Guildhall Wickham Water Meadows and the Science Centre at Winchester; Marwell Zoo; and The Queen Elizabeth Country Park at Horndean, with 1, 400 acres of woodland and downland. The beaches at Wittering and Hayling can be reached within an hour, and a day trip to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth or Southampton should not be missed. Fishing nearby. Beach 30 miles.
