The Eden Valley provides superb walking and cycling, and the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales are easy to visit too. The atmospheric, rugged area of Haweswater, 8 miles, has a viewpoint for golden eagles, pretty villages and bustling market towns abound, with a lively calendar of farmers' markets and county shows. There is plenty of local produce to purchase or enjoy in the many restaurants and pubs serving regional favourites. There is also excellent road access to the historic border city of Carlisle with its castle and museum, and Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site, has interesting exhibitions to visit. The Northumberland National Park and southern Scotland are both within an hour's drive. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
