Exquisite Stranraer Cottage

6 People|4 Bedrooms|

Property Description

This spacious detached cottage makes a peaceful rural retreat with a river running through the grounds, and is surrounded by open countryside. The cottage has a multi-fuel burner to keep you warm on chilly evenings and for summer days there is a garden to sit out in and enjoy the sunshine. The cottage is located only 8 miles from the bustling harbour town of Stranraer situated at the head of Loch Ryan. This is the gateway to the Rhinns of Galloway, and for more than a century was a busy ferry port for transport between south-west Scotland and Northern Ireland. The town's main attraction is the Castle of St John, a ruined four-story tower house built around 1500, which sits in the main street. Stranraer Museum can be found in the old town hall and is worth paying a visit.

Close by are Castle Kennedy Gardens, with the castle, two lochs, a giant lily pond and an avenue of monkey puzzle trees to enjoy. Logan Botanic Garden sits 13 miles south of the town and is home to exotic ferns and palms and a boasts a beautiful walled garden. This region is steeped in history and the diverse landscape is a haven for artists, birdwatchers and walkers. Portpatrick, 8 miles, lies at the start of the Southern Upland Way one of Scotland's celebrated long distance footpaths; it covers 212 miles to Cockburnspath on the east coast. The Mull of Galloway with its grass topped visitor centre is Scotland's most southerly point, and it has wonderful views towards Ireland, England, Isle of Man and Scotland! If you are lucky you may spot seals and minke whales, and will most certainly see a host of sea birds. For an alternative day out, why not take the high speed ferry to Ireland for a spot of sightseeing or a shopping trip to Belfast. Beach 5 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 8 miles.
