For walkers and cyclists, there are many established public footpaths and cycle paths that pass just a few minutes away from the door and lead out into Weardale and beyond. Passing through some of the most scenic countryside, fields and woodland, guests will be able to enjoy a short 1¼ mile walk to the nearest pub in either Frosterley or Stanhope, or further on through Weardale, Teasdale and County Durham. The North Pennines have been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with spectacular walks including the Weardale Way, which passes through the farm, and the Pennine Way which is within easy reach. Nature lovers can explore the abundance of footpaths, nature walks and bridleways in the area. Popular with guests of all ages, Hamsterley Forest is the ideal destination for families. With the Gruffalo Trail and cycle hire available, this is a great spot for a picnic and a day out. Durham's disused railway tracks are within easy reach and cover many miles (routes can be provided). The North York Moors, the Northumberland coast and the Lake District can all be reached within an hour's drive, making this a great base from which to explore the north of England. There are also fishing opportunities in the area, the farm has its own stretch of private fishing on the River Wear, which is available to guests. The river fishing season runs from the 21st March each year until the 30th October. A licence is required and can be arranged. There are also several good, well stocked reservoirs within a 20-minute drive.
Only a 30-minute drive away is the cathedral city of Durham, where visitors really must take a day trip to see this World Heritage Site. With many historical sites to visit, including Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, the city is a great destination at any time of year. There are numerous street festivals that take place all year round, including the book festival, jazz week, poetry festival, miners' gala and the awesome Lumiere show held every two years. Packed with plenty of places where you can eat and drink, as well as an abundance of high street shops and quirky boutiques, Durham has something to offer to visitors of all ages. Shop 1½ miles, pub and restaurant 1¼ miles.
