The village developed in the 1800s as an overnight stop on the north-south drove road, and this location is responsible for its present popularity as a walking and outdoor centre. It is the start (or finish) of the famous Lykewake Walk, which is extremely popular with outdoor enthusiasts who are spoilt for choice of walking routes in this beautiful part of the world. From cross moor hikes to a leisurely stroll around the nearby lake and sheep wash, there is something for all abilities. It is also a bikers paradise, with routes out across the moors in all directions, including the White Rose cycle route.

The North York Moors comprises of the Plain of Cleveland to the north, and the vales of Pickering and York to the south. The park is at its scenic best in August and September, when the purple heather is in bloom. The Cleveland Way National Trail also runs through the village, while Wainwright's famous coast to coast walk passes close by. Other places well worth a visit nearby include Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, Mount Grace Priory, Hutton-le-Hole, Thornton-le-Dale and Goathland, also known as 'Heartbeat' country. The town of Northallerton is just a drive or bus ride away, which has been an established market town since the 1200s, or spend a day in Thirsk and enjoy its history and the World of James Herriott attraction. The medieval walled city of York is well worth a visit, or a trip to the seaside with the Gothic fishing town of Whitby, just an hour away. There is so much to do that you will want to come back!
