Launceston, or Lansun as the Cornish pronounce it, is an historic town, with the ruins of a Norman castle, built around 1070 AD, perched high up on a hill. There is a good shopping area for essential items, and lots to do in and around the area for all ages. Visit the castle, take a trip on a steam train at Launceston Steam Railway, see otters playing and learn about nature at the Tamar Otter Park, step back in history at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, enjoy a round at Trethorne Golf Club or explore The Tamar Trail. There are some fabulous beaches along the north Cornwall coastline, and the Atlantic coast ranges from gorgeous sandy beaches, ideal for young children, to surf beaches for the more adventurous. Enjoy stunning coastal vistas of dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves and picturesque harbours can also be admired. One such harbour is Port Issac where the TV series “Doc Martin' is filmed. Another favourite is Tintagel, steeped in the mystery of kings and dragons. Bude is a family favourite, and Crackington Haven is popular with holidaymakers and locals alike. High up on Bodmin Moor, just south of Launceston, is the famous Jamaica Inn – the smugglers' inn, written about by the author Daphne du Maurier. Nearer home and just down the road from Netherbridge Farm is Homeleigh Garden Centre, a fabulous place to visit which is stocked with beautiful plants. Not just a garden centre, it has much more on offer, including a large restaurant, pet area, gifts and kitchenware, clothing, ponds and garden ornaments, and a large farm shop selling a great selection of local produce. You can stop off before you leave and stock up on some Cornish plants or foods to take back home as a memento of your holiday here in truly glorious Cornwall.
