Cosy Shaftesbury Cottage

4 People|2 Bedrooms|

Property Description

This holiday cottage, with an outbuilding between the two properties, has a large, private and secluded patio area perched above the fields behind, offering far-reaching rural views across Blackmore Vale and cider orchards. There is a raised pond and fountain where you can listen to the sounds of birdsong. Locally produced award-winning cider is available from the farm opposite. The interior has been decorated and furnished, with great attention to detail and style. Attached to the owners home, it provides an excellent base from which to explore this corner of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. There are many countryside walks directly from the property, so you can leave the car and explore the beautiful Dorset countryside by foot. This includes a nice stroll to Buckhorn Weston where you will find the village pub/restaurant that welcomes walkers and their dogs. About 5 miles to the east you will Shaftesbury, a small market town in Dorset with a recorded history that goes back to the Saxon hilltop forts. You can experience what it was like back in King Alfred's time whilst walking round the ruins of the Abbey, or just enjoy the history of the area displayed in the Gold Hill Museum. The town is the home of Gold Hill, made famous by the “Hovis' advertisement, and has magnificent views over the Blackmore Vale. There are a wide variety of independent shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. Surrounding Shaftesbury you will find the towns of Gillingham, Mere, Sturminster Newton and Sherbone, which make up the Blackmore Vale, where you can follow in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy along the River Stour, as well as visit Gillingham Museum with its railway history. You can also visit Sturminster Newton's Mill and explore many of the varied and interesting shops and sights along the way. Sherbone, famous for its abbey and range of quality independent shops is only a short drive away. This area is the “gateway to the south west' from which you can tour the area from Stonehenge in the east, to Bath and Bristol to the north, Bournemouth and the Jurassic Coast to the south. Within a short drive is Stourhead, an estate at the source of the River Stour, near Mere, which includes a Palladian mansion and world-famous landscape garden (NT). Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 1/2 mile.
