During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, smuggling was rife on the Marsh. Dymchurch is known for the fictional Dr Syn, created by the author Russel Thorndike, as the smuggler who posed as a respectable vicar in Dymchurch. Dymchurch even hosts a Day of Syn every 2nd year to celebrate this.
Across the Marsh there are many lovely churches, and right on your doorstep is All Saints Church in Burmarsh. This is the lowest of the Marsh churches, being some 4m below sea level, and with a stunning Norman doorway. The flat terrain of the marshes and the winding lanes make this area excellent for cycling, and guests can store their bikes in the hallway. Explore the National Cycle Route 2, where you can travel to the Cinque Port town of Rye, or Folkestone.
The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch 15 narrow gauge light railway covers 13 miles from Hythe, renowned for its antique shops, cafs, and of course the Military Canal, through to Dungeness, home of the rspb nature reserve. Nature lovers should also visit the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre.
Port Lympe and Howletts Wild Animal Parks make for great days out. Bring your passport and hop on a ferry from Dover to Calais, or take the shuttle and indulge in a spot of lunch in Paris. Beach 1 mile. Shop 1 miles. Pub and restaurant next door.
